from Rex:
I went to the Prairie Schooner Book prize reading last night (Jan 31st) -- Kwame Dawes is bringing on the "Prairie Schooner New School" push with a rush!
Kwame kicked off the evening in the lush, up-to-the-minute-design hall at the Andersen Building (Journalism Dept - used to be an insurance bldg - 15th & Q sts) with a short informal, warm greeting and moved quickly to outline the evening's activities -- then ...
We had an interpretive piece of digital art based on one of James Crews's poems (Orpheus, Twice, p. 49, from James' book, The Book of What Stays), (James is the 2010 Poetry winner) by one of the UNL profs, Luis Peon-Casanova , and then 20 minutes of James Crews reading, opening with his "Palomino" poem, and going through a number of masterful sombernesses --
then a musical piece written and sung by "Mississippi" James Redd - on part of a story by the fiction winner from 2010, Greg Hrbek, from his 2010 -winning book, "Destroy All Monsters" ..... a great musical piece, by the way, so well crafted and sung -- ! ..AAAAnd then a reading of part of Greg's fiction, which is a story based on an Islamo-Fascist nuclear attack with a dirty bomb on San Francisco - sort of -----
AAAnd then a DANCE piece from the UNL School of Dance with 8 members and the Director of the School of Dance, Susan Levine, interpreting a poem by the 2009 winner of the Schooner Poetry Prize, Shane Book ...
and then a 9 minute film conceived and assembled by Shane, on his poem, "Dust", a so-well-done reflection and unfolding of that work --
and THEN, poetry from that book, by the author Shane --
all told, an almost 2 hour program that was magnificient -- and held at the School of Journalism (Andersen Hall - some of last year's Book Fest events were held there) .. which is a fab video studio/auditorium --
And now we see a BIG two-day event at the Sheldon!! EEE-Haaaa !! "

GOOD News from the Creative Writing dept. of Lincoln high School (Deborah McGinn):
Scribe 2012 , the literary magazine of Lincoln High School since 1930 has won for the second year in a row, the National Council of Teachers of English Highest Superior Award. A total of 391 schools entered their magazines and 96 were considered. The editorial squad, as they choose to be called, are very proud of themselves. Our shirts this year are cardinal red with white letters classy and spiffy.
In addition, I am trying to get a slam poetry team started at Lincoln High. Matt Mason and Andrew Ek have masterminded the plan and organized it well. There is a superb documentary I encourage you to see called “Louder Than a Bomb” Google Adam “Poet Breathe” from “Louder Than a Bomb” and watch this kid perform with passion you have never seen before. Google “Counting Graves” from the same source to see the power of a four-person ensemble. This documentary has our kids on fire with inspiration to compose.
This event will be Nebraska’s first, originating in Chicago, and LHS will be the only Lincoln team to compete in “Louder Than a Bomb” (the contest name) in Omaha this April. The professional coach assigned to Lincoln High is Dominique Garay and I am excited to work with him. Dom and I will strategize after school one day a week with kids. During the week I will have them writing so they are competent on the page and Dom will come to help shape the performance aspect. We will not be a team of yelling nonsense, but a team of writing and revising so our original pieces sing figurative language from metaphor to sharp details with a story and message. We have diverse voices and authentic tales, full of rich experience.
Let's cheer on the LHS Slam Team!!!
